For many, a new year means a new resolution to get fit and healthy. While it may seem that the best way to get going is by hitting the ground running, actually our bodies require time to adjust to prevent burnout and fatigue early on.
Here are a few tips to prevent fitness burn out, and to keep your resolution going all year long:
As kids we didn’t start running before we learned how to walk. Starting out by jogging three miles right out of the gate may not work for some people, and can cause injuries if you’re not careful. However, gradually increasing exercise throughout the year can help you build the stamina you need to eventually run three miles without stopping – and without injury!
A simple way to gradually increase your running stamina is interval training. Start off by walking for five minutes and jogging for one minute. Every week, transfer a minute over to the jogging side (four minutes walking and two minutes jogging). This allows your body to take breaks in between periods of increased activity, and helps gradually stretch out your muscles instead of shocking them all at once.
Another way to take it slow in the beginning is to, well, start with the basics. If you’re looking to be more flexible in 2017, basic yoga classes may be the way to go. They are an easy way to get in-tuned with your body without a lot of stress. Finding a studio that helps beginners break into a practice is great because you won’t be intimidated by people more advanced than you.
Another great way to break into yoga is to try it yourself at home. There are hundreds of videos on YouTube to help you start practicing yoga from the comfort of your own home. This way, you can practice at your own speed and perfect your poses without the pressure of other people around you.
It’s important to allow your body time to recover when starting a new fitness regime. Rest helps your muscles relax and gives them time to rebound before your next workout. If you’re feeling sore or stiff, make sure you’re drinking plenty of water during and after exercising. This helps keep your muscles from feeling as stiff, replaces fluids, and keeps your body cool while exercising.
The HYDAWAY bottle is a handy item for hydrating while working out. After finishing your exercise and your water, it’s easy to collapse the HYDAWAY bottle into your gym bag or purse. It’s 21 oz capacity and soft silicone sides make a convenient hydration choice for runners and yogis and anyone in between.
Sticking to your new year’s resolutions can be a daunting task, but starting slow, spacing out your workouts, and preventing burn out can help keep your resolution throughout this new year.
Stay hydrated and healthy in 2017 and happy new year!
