As the leaves change color and the air becomes crisp, Halloween lurks just around the corner! Halloween is one of our favorite holidays, so we’ve compiled fun and safe activities to help you celebrate Halloween with your family:

No-Carve Pumpkin Painting

Maybe you’re looking to save on mess or your little ones are too young to carve. No matter the reason, painting pumpkins is a great alternative to carving! Using non-toxic acrylic paint for your pumpkins is not only an affordable option but can be easily washed off hands with soap and water.

The Teal Pumpkin Project

In an effort to include more children in the festivities of Halloween, the Food Allergy Research and Education Foundation created the Teal Pumpkin Project. The project aims to help include children with aggressive food allergies in trick or treating festivities.

By placing an all teal pumpkin on your porch, you’re signifying to trick or treaters that you have treats that are friendly to children with food allergies. This is a good way to include the trick-or-treaters who have to be a little more cautious during the Halloween season.

If you’re interested in participating in the Teal Pumpkin project, consider handing out small gifts and toys instead of candy. Simple things like spider rings, stickers, wooden airplanes, and Halloween coloring packs are all great ideas for children who have severe food allergies.

Door Decorating

This activity can be Halloween fun for the whole family! Take time decorating doors with things that you may have around the house, such as construction paper, fall foliage, or toilet paper. It’s very easy to transform your bathroom door into Frankenstein’s monster or a toilet paper mummy.

Consider turning this into a friendly family competition! Have everybody decorate a door in the house, and the winner decides how to decorate the front door for trick or treaters. This is a fun and creative way to bring the family together for the Halloween season.

Bake Dog Safe Pumpkin Treats

Getting everyone involved means bringing the pets in as well! Pumpkin meat is high in fiber and can help with your dog’s digestion. Puree fresh pumpkin and mix it into their food, or you can bake small dog treats using a recipe, such as this recipe from Munchkins and the Military.

If you end up using canned pumpkin, make sure to choose pumpkin puree and NOT pumpkin pie filling. Pumpkin pie filling contains a lot more seasonings that can be harmful to your dog’s digestive system.

When your neighbors are out and about trick or treating, having a couple of pumpkins treats on hand is a nice gift for the four-legged members of the family. It’s important to always ask the dog’s owner before offering them treats, as some dogs can be sensitive to grains.
